Alhamdulillah upon us is a blessed day. Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Prophet (ﷺ) came to Madinah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of ‘Ashura’. He said, ‘What is this?’ They said, ‘This is a righteous day, it is the day when Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemies, so Musa fasted on this day.’ He said, ‘We have more right to Musa than you,’ so he fasted on that day and commanded [the Muslims] to fast on that day.” [Bukhari] “This is a righteous day” – in a report narrated by Muslim, [the Jews said:] “This is a great day, on which Allah saved Musa and his people, and drowned Pharaoh and his people.” “Musa fasted on this day” – a report narrated by Muslim adds: ” … in thanksgiving to Allah, so we fast on this day.” According to a report narrated by Bukhari: ” … so we fast on this day to venerate it.” A version narrated by Imam Ahmad adds: “This is the day on which the Ark settled on Mount Judi, so Nuh fasted this day in thanksgiving,” and “commanded [the Muslims] to fast on that day” – according to another report also narrated by al-Bukhari: “He said to his Companions: ‘You have more right to Musa than they do, so fast on that day.’ ”

1. “…and fasting the day of ‘Aashuraa, I hope Allah will expiate thereby the year that came before it.” [Muslim]

2. “When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) fasted on the Day of ‘Aashuraa and told the people to fast, they said, ‘Oh Messenger of Allah, this is a day venerated by the Jews and Christians.’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, ‘Next year if Allah wills, we will [also] fast on the 9th day.’ But by the time the following year came, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had passed away.” [Muslim]

3. “The best fasting after Ramadan is the month of Allah Muharram, and the best prayer after the obligatory prayer is the prayer at night.” [Muslim]

4. “Whoever fasts one day seeking the pleasure of Allah, if that is the last day of his life, he will enter Paradise.” [Ahmad, Saheeh at-Targheeb 1/412]

5. “Whoever fasts one day for the sake of Allah, Allah will remove his face seventy years’ distance from the Fire.” [Muslim 2/808]

6. Fasting will say: “O Lord, I prevented him from his food and physical desires during the day, so let me intercede for him.” [Musnad Ahmad 2/174]

7. “Every deed of the son of Adam will be multiplied between ten and seven hundred times. Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, said: Except fasting. It is for Me and I shall reward for it. He gives up his desires and his food for My sake.” [Muslim 1151]

8. “The du’aa of the fasting person will not be refused.” [al-Silsilat al-Saheeh 1797]
