We can all benefit from learning how to schedule time for solitude. This beautiful and forgotten act of worship is truly a powerful one.
Our beloved Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ would take out time from his day, usually at night when others are asleep to stand before Allāh ﷻ in Ṣalāh, remember Him ﷻ, talk to Him through duʿā and reflect on the innumerable blessings of Allāh ﷻ upon him.
Self-reflection is an opportunity to develop self-awareness which leads to self-improvement. Spending time alone is crucial for our spiritual and mental health. It’s very important to be intentional about how and why you are spending time alone. Research suggests that there must be skills associated with the capacity to be alone, just as people learn social skills to navigate the world of relationships successfully.
Researcher Virginia Thomas, Ph.D. found, that healthy adults who frequently sought out time in solitude (but didn’t feel lonely) revealed that they use specific strategies to make time alone a constructive and enjoyable experience. Let’s schedule a few moments alone every day to deepen our connection with Allāh ﷻ and ourselves.
With love and duʿā,
